| Vanguard - A Melee soloer's look at levels 1-25 |
Over the weekend I hit the midway point in Adventure levels, the magic 25. While this may mean I am 50% of the way to the level cap I know I am not 50% of the way done the game. Far from it. I don't think I have even scratched the surface. SO what has the first 25 levels been like? LEt me just say I am goinf to subscribe to VG.
Vanguard - First Contact
I played VG when it was first released. Rico was big on it and even Dizz was liking it quite a bit. And with Liithe playing I figured might as well try it. Of course I had no idea beyond melee what class to play so I did like alway and became an alt-a-holic. Bit of a mistake on my part. I ended up with 6 characters all around 8-10 in level and no clear winner. I liked them all. Rico kept saying play till 14 or so, the class will come alive then. Nice idea but when you can't decided between this awesome class and that awesome class its kinda hard. I tried the crafting and it just seemed so tedious boring. I pushed on but EQ2 ended up calling me back. Thus my first venture in VG was a dismal failure.
Fate Intervenes
Rico kept saying how good a game it was, just a couple of smart patches to fix the big stuff then watch out. After a few months Sony actually went forward with the updates Rico had been hoping for. Just before Christmas he started praising all the fixes. Vanguard was a whole new game. Guess Sony felt the same way because they offered a free month for returning gamers. Fate or whatever, it was around this time I cancelled my EQ2 sub. Even after the expansion with just me in game, the ... Read more |

| SOE bought out, moving to India |
Put your tinfoil hats on. Quote: Apparantly, Zapak Digital entertainment, an India-based online gaming company, is set to buy out Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) for around $300 million.
This acquisition is in line with the future plans of Zapak Digital, which is planning to enter the gaming space in China by early next year. “This makes perfect sense for us, as around 80% of content in the gaming industry is manufactured internationally. Buying out Sony, will not only give us access but also expand our reach in the global market,” said a senior Zapak Official. Zing! ... Read more |

| Who didn't skip? |
So I've been playing a lot of guild wars lately and really been enjoying it except for the people. Guild wars seems to attract a lot of bad attitudes. I really think it has to do with age because guild wars does not require a credit card. So it appeals to younger people who do not have one, want to play a MMO and don't want to hassle their parents for it. Yes gross over generalization but I suspect it's true.
In guild wars there are missions that take you through the story line as you go. To complete a mission you need to generally group up and take 2-7 other people. During the mission there are cut scenes that explain what is going on with the mission and progress the storyline. If you seen it all before and if everyone in your group chooses to, you can skip the cut scene. There's a button at the bottom of the screen that allows you to do this and at the top it shows how many of your team mates have decided to skip. It will say something like 3 of 4 members of your party would like to skip this cut scene. I use this number 3 of 4 because this is almost always the number when I play missions. I'm the 4th person who does not wish to skip because A) I haven't seen it before B) it gives me a chance to jump up and get another beer C) I have to run into the other room and start another episode of teletubbies for my daughter. Nine times out of ten though it's because I haven't seen it before and SHOCKER I actually want to see the storyline and watch the cut scenes I paid for.
Now of course from the title you can tell there's a problem with this. The combination of showing how many have chosen to skip and the volatile nature of the guild wars player base inevitable du ... Read more |

| Tabula Rasa Delayed |
Wow last minute delay for Tabula Rasa.
Quote: Many of you have heard my mantra for game development: "Stable, Fast, Fun. In that order." We need a little more time to make that happen.
To this end we are moving our Pre-Order headstart date to 10/30/07 and our commercial service start date to 11/2/07. This short but critical amount of time will give us time to address several issues including stability and balance as well as allowing our players to test the continent of Ligo (L38+) and our major changes to crafting for a few weeks rather than a few days. Our entire development staff feels this extra time is needed as does our beta community. We feel confident that this extra time will make a difference on launch day.
That said we are excited about launching the game and moving into a "live" environment where the entire future of the AFS is ahead of us. Expect more posts from Richard Garriott, Paul Sage, and other dev staff over the next few days as they discuss plans for elder content and content updates both long and short term. One of us will also be posting to the website every Friday in order to directly address your feedback, which you can submit via the Feedback Form found here on the RGTR.com website.
See you in game as we wrap up this final leg of testing and get ready for the end-of-beta blow out! ... Read more |

| Metaplace why the excitement? |
Alright it's all over the blogs about Raph Koster's new project called Metaplace. In fact I'm not even going to give you a description like you don't know what it is cause if you've been on the internet this week you know. And I'm not a journalist so I don't have to be fair and give you the press release for it. I'm a gamer. A hard core, play every mmo, play way to many hours a week, gamer. So What is Raph offering me that gets me excited? So far nothing.
I don't really understand why everyone is getting excited about a project that is basically a bunch of mini-games or mini-mmo's strung together and created by small unprofessional teams. MMOs are big undertakings and if you have all the money you need it doesn't guarentee success. How many MMOs have failed, been pushed back or died in the last year? And of those that actually made it to market or worth playing. What makes anyone think that these mini-mmos are suddenly going to be the solution to this? There's already tools and solutions for this out there and there has not been a single game that has come to light that's been really worth playing. Are we really so confident in Raph's god like abilities that he's going to make the tools so easy to use so robust that anyone can throw together a fun mmo? Ok so he's making a mmo on the metaplace platform. He has a professional team that's going to use it. Now how long will it take them to complete their MMO? 1 year? 2-3? longer? if there professionals how long will it take an amateur team? Again are we really excited about this that it could take years upon years before there's g ... Read more |
