Over-driving your video card

Postby Amokk on Sat Jan 30, 2010 9:52 pm

So who has heard of this? I discovered it while playing STO open beta. Apparently there is a bug where the game will try to run your card at max settings all the time even if you set the graphics back. Ends up overheating the card. Have to set the max FPS before playing. The game was locking up and I realized my card was running at 85 degrees. I set the maxfps to 40-50 fps and the temp drops to 60. Crazy.

It is very weird. I play on max settings as well. Here are three scenarios.
1) If I do nothing but set GPU fan to 100% and play STO the GPU hits 75 degrees.
2) If I do all that and go into STO and set /maxfps to say 40 the GPU temp will drop to 66 degrees.
3) If I leave the fan speed at stock and got into STO and play the GPU will hit 85 degrees and cause the game to lock up.

I have never had a game cause heating issues like that. But I have also never heard of a game over-driving a video card and forcing it to max performance.

10 to 1 odds his graphics card is over heating over another issue....like say poor heat sinks and/or fans.

That's why I've gone water kiddos, and I mean the whole sheeebang...cards, cpu, nice triple radiator.

Cool temps I got.

And the addiction is spreading...I might try my hand at chilled water cooling or TEC next for those negative temps.

Over clockers paradise.

fans on graphics cards are easily replaceable and so are the crappy thermal paste over the gpus.

I would think better fan if it did it in other games. But I can play LotRO, Dragon Age, Champions Online, pretty much any other game and not see the heat spike I get with STO.
